Atmabodha notes

 2 bodha anya sadhana 

as opposed to other spiritual practices

self knowledge is the direct means of enlightenment.

just as fire is the direct means of cooking 

enlightenment is impossible without self knowledge.

sa vid ....ya vimuktaye

3 avirodhitaya karma

other spiritual practices can co exist with ignorance

na vidyam vini vartayet

so they cannot remove ignorance

vidya vidya nihantyeva

self knowledge alone removes ignorance

tejas timir sanghavat

like light removes darkness.

parichanna iva dnyanat

since, the true self is hidden

tan nashe sati kevalaha

when that ignorance is removed

swayam prakashate hyatma

atma reveals itself

megha paye m shuman iva

like the sun reveals itself when clouds drift away

adnyann kalusham jivam

a person tainted by ignorance

dnyana bhyasat vinirmalam

is purified when ignorance vanishes due to  self knowledge

krutva dnyanam svyam nashyej

then that self knowledge itself vanishes

jalam katak renuvat

like alum dissolves

sansar swapnotulyohi

the world is like a dream

raga dvesha adi sankulaha

filled with pleasant and unpleasant experiences

svakale satya d bhati

it seems real

prabhode satya sadbhavet

until you wake up and discover its not

...

tavat satyam jagat bhati

the world seems absolutely real

shukti kaa rajatam yatha

similar to a glittering sea shell which seems like a piece of silver

yavan na dnyayate bramha

until bramha is discovered

sarvadhishtanam advayam.

as the world's underlying non dual reality

sacchidatma anusyute

created from the sentient underlying reality

nitye visshnau prakalpitaha

eternal and pervasive

vyaktayo vividha sarva

are all things that exist

haatake katakaadivata

like a bracelet made from gold.

yatha kasho rishikesho

like the space in many pots

nanopadhi gato vibhuh

all pervasive consciousness dwells in many bodies

tad bhedad bhinnavat bhati

and seems divided by them

tan nashe kevalo bhavet

in the absence of pots and bodies,

space and consciousness remain undivided

the attributes of bodies

jati varnaashrama dayaha

like caste color status etc

atmanya aropitas toye

are superimposed on atma

rasa varandi bhedavat

like diff tastes and colours are superimposed on water

Although embodies, the enlightened ones move like moodha, fools in the ocean of unawakened individuals.

They move like space, unaffected by whatever.

moving without attachment like the wind.

53 gaining which nothing remains to be attained,

no other happiness

no other knowledge

that bramha should be realized

...

yat prapya na kinchit vanchati na shochati na ramate notsahi bhavati

becoming which there is no rebirth

knowing which nothing remains to be known

that bramha should be realized.

atma is discovered with the eye of wisdom

one without the eye of wisdom cannot discover it

like the blind cannot see the sun

yaha swa atma tirtham bhajate vinishkriyaha

by worshipping at this holy pilgrimage site within yourself

sa sarvavit sarva gato mruto bhavet

one becomes enlightened, limitless and immortal.

July 2023- Swami Ramdas, Kabir's poems

 By a complete surrender to the 'Will of Ram', 

we lose consciousness of the body 

which keeps us aloof from Him,

 and find ourselves in a state of complete identification and union with Ram.

who is in us and everywhere around us. 

 In this condition, hatred which means consciousness of diversity, ceases, and 

Love, consciousness of Unity, is realised. 

This Divine Love can be attained by humbling ourselves to such a degree as to totally subdue our egoism, 

our self-assertion as a separate individual existence. 

Having reached this stage, we, by the awakened consciousness of Unity or Love, are naturally prompted to sacrifice all the interests that concern the body, 

for the welfare of our fellow-men and fellow-creatures who are all manifestations of the same Ram.

I said to the wanting-creature inside me:
What is this river you want to cross?
There are no travelers on the river-road, and no road.
Do you see anyone moving about on that bank, or nesting?

There is no river at all, and no boat, and no boatman.
There is no tow rope either, and no one to pull it.
There is no ground, no sky, no time, no bank, no ford!

And there is no body, and no mind!
Do you believe there is some place that will make the
soul less thirsty?
In that great absence you will find nothing.

Be strong then, and enter into your own body;
there you have a solid place for your feet.
Think about it carefully!
Don't go off somewhere else!

Kabir says this: just throw away all thoughts of
imaginary things,
and stand firm in that which you are.

Where do you search me?
I am with you
Not in pilgrimage, nor in icons
Neither in solitudes
Not in temples, nor in mosques
Neither in Kaba nor in Kailash
I am with you O man

Not in yogic exercises
Neither in renunciation
Neither in the vital force nor in the body
Not even in the ethereal space
Neither in the womb of Nature
Not in the breath of the breath
Seek earnestly and discover
In but a moment of search
Says Kabir, Listen with care
Where your faith is, I am there.

Within the Supreme Brahma, the worlds are being told like beads:
Look upon that rosary with the eyes of wisdom.

PLAYED day and night with my comrades, and now I am greatly afraid.
So high is my Lord's palace, my heart trembles to mount its stairs: yet I must not be shy, if I would enjoy His love.
My heart must cleave to my Lover; I must withdraw my veil, and meet Him with all my body:
Mine eyes must perform the ceremony of the lamps of love.
Kabîr says: "Listen to me, friend: he understands who loves. If you feel not love's longing for your Beloved One, it is vain to adorn your body, vain to put unguent on your eyelids."

What is seen is not the Truth
What is cannot be said
Trust comes not without seeing
Nor understanding without  words
The wise comprehends with knowledge
To the ignorant it is but a wonder
Some worship the formless God
Some worship His various forms
In what way He is beyond these attributes
Only the Knower knows
That music cannot be written
How can then be the notes
Says Kabir,  awareness alone will overcome illusion

O HOW may I ever express that secret word?
O how can I say He is not like this, and He is like that?
If I say that He is within me, the universe is ashamed:
If I say that He is without me, it is falsehood.
He makes the inner and the outer worlds to be indivisibly one;
The conscious and the unconscious, both are His footstools.
He is neither manifest nor hidden, He is neither revealed nor unrevealed:
There are no words to tell that which He is.

I went looking for Him
And lost myself;
The dropp merged with the Sea -
Who can find it now?

Looking and looking for Him
I lost myself;
The Sea merged with the dropp -
Who can find it now?

My body is flooded
With the flame of Love.
My soul lives in
A furnace of bliss.

Love's fragrance
Fills my mouth,
And fans through all things
With each outbreath.

Kabîr says, "O brother! he who has seen that radiance of love, he is saved."

The young plant of Bhakti in Ram was thus nurtured in the electric atmosphere created by the influence of these great men on the mind of humble Ramdas. It was at this time that it slowly dawned upon his mind that Ram was the only Reality and all else was false. Whilst desires for the enjoyment of worldly things were fast falling off, the consideration of ‘me’ and ‘mine’ was also wearing out. The sense of possession and relationship was vanishing. All thought, all mind, all heart, all soul was concentrated on Ram, Ram covering up and absorbing everything.

From Swami Ramdas books -2

A man who has surrendered himself to God is happy beyond measure, for he has found the fountain of eternal bliss within himself. 

Seek and find out this centre of bliss, Ram.

Give up everything, sacrifice everything, 

forsake everything, abandon everything, for the sweet, nectar-like love of Ram. 

It is so precious, it is so mighty, it is so blissful. 

O Ramdas, swim in it, dance in it, be thoroughly mad with it. 

There is no gain higher than this love; 

no achievement greater than this love; no attainment more desirable than this love. 

Therefore, Ramdas, live for ever and for ever in the ecstasy of this maddening love.

18. The Right Path:

What is the right path? 

It is the path of self-suffering, 

self-mortification, 

self-sacrifice and finally self-surrender

 that leads the devotee to the highest goal, God - Love - Ram. 

......

While on the path, tread upon the thorns bravely; jump over the obstacles fearlessly; overcome all obstructions boldly; face dangers courageously; march onward and faint not - “stop not till the goal is reached.”

 Give up the ego, crush it out, and go forward to embrace the Lord Ram. 

The ego sets up the thorns, the obstacles, the obstructions and the dangers along the path. 

With the Lord’s help fight out this ego, and come out victorious; 

then unending, uninterrupted bliss and freedom are thine.

First the repetition of Ram’s name;

 then the realisation of His presence in all things and beings; 

lastly the state of Samadhi, 

in which names and forms are dropped – a state of bliss and peace – and the Eternal is attained.

14. Individual Will Has No Place In One's Life Spiritual 

“Really, man has no will of his own. 

There is only one Divine will at work everywhere and in all. 


It is a mistake to think that we, as individuals, have got any power to do anything. 

God is behind everything.”

20. Witness Consciousness Dissolves The Mind 

“Really, to stand apart from mind and watch its activities, is a blissful exercise. 

The moment the dissociation becomes complete, that is to say, 

one's identification with the watcher or the witness becomes perfect, 

that very moment the mind dissolves, and you attain Samadhi, i.e. absolute peace and bliss.”

What is needed is to fix the attention on the pure ‘I’ after the subsidence of all thoughts and not to lose hold of it.

Sam:

The strong hold of self preservation deep in the core ...that  doesn't allow you to cling to God.

That is what disallows Grace to be showered on you.

All your 'efforts' can only do harm to you...not any good.

It is not easy to reach that state of non hankering.

It is not that easy to open up your heart for Grace.

Most people are so petty...when it comes to opening up for Grace.

The strong, strong, strong tendency that asserts self preservation and self existence should vanish.

I believe in an entity is self assertion. 

And I make extreme efforts to continue with that  possibility to self assert is what could in this context be termed as self assertion.

When that strong strong strong tendency of self assertion and self preservation is dismantled, one becomes a 'prey' to God's Grace.

..

Unless you are completely 'devoured' by God's Grace,

there is not even the faintest inkling of the concept of 'God.'

..........

It's All or None.

.......

Grace is either in Full or None.

......

Grace doesn't allow you to go left or right. 

.......

It takes you where IT wants you to take.

And you have no choice.

In fact it is Grace only when you have No choice.

...

If there is choosing 

Then it is not grace.

It is something else.

And something else doesn't take you to where you should be going.

......

If prayers exist, Grace cannot function.

If belief in the unreal exists, Grace cannot exist.

If clinging for self preservation exists, 

Grace cannot enter.

If you are taking care of yourself,

Grace cannot exist.

If you are still the Doer,

Grace cannot exist.

.............

The only thing to do is to stay as the Self.

Nothing else.

Stay as who you are.

Not as who you are not.

For those first grade sadhus who aspire only to reach the feet of lord shiva, it is better to live as an object to be pitied in the eyes of the worldly people

rather than to be envied.

if jiva's actions acceopted as shiv'as actions then jiva cannot remain separate from shiva.

in such a state jiva will lose all his individual existence.

when jiva has thus surrendered there will be no separate ego.

state of surrender is the state of complete destruction of the ego.

sam:

Surrender is not that easily understood.

if one cannot understand self enquiry, it is not easy to understand self surrender.

self surrender is dissociating that clinging to self preservation,

dismantling that software program that is going on in the background 24/7

which essentially constitutes

fear, anxiety
