Disciples of Ramanna

The Maharshi turned his beautiful eyes towards Ramdas and looked intently for a few minutes into his eyes as though he was pouring into Ramdas his blessing through those orbs, then shook his head to say he had blessed.


A thrill of inexpressible joy coursed through the frame of Ramdas, his whole body  quivering, like a leaf in the breeze ….


Now at the prompting of Lord Rama (Ram), Ramdas desired to remain in solitude for some time … The sadhuram was ever ready to fulfil his wishes. Losing no time, he took Ramdas up the mountain behind the great temple. Climbing high up he showed him many caves. Of these, one small cave was selected for Ramdas, which he occupied next day. In this cave he lived for nearly a month in deep meditation of Ram. This was the first time he was taken by Ram into solitude for his bhajan. Now he felt most blissful sensations since he could hold undisturbed communion with Ram. He was actually rolling in a sea of indescribable happiness. To fix the mind on that fountain of bliss, Ram, means, to experience pure joy … He went on taking the Name (Ram) in an ecstasy of longing when, lo, suddenly his Lord Rama … appeared before him and danced and danced …


“Did you see Lord Rama with closed eyes or open?” I interjected.


“With open eyes, as Ramdas is seeing you,” Papa answered. “But it was not this momentary vision that Ramdas’s heart craved. For he knew that a vision like this, was unlikely to last and so, when the Lord would vanish, Ramdas would revert to his darkness. Therefore he prayed for the great darshan, the Vision of visions, which comes to stay for ever so there is no more parting, namely the Vishvarupa Darshan, longing to see Rama always in everything; that is nothing less would satisfy Ramdas.”


Papa paused and then resumed with a beatific smile: “And it came one morning and the entire landscape changed: All was Rama, nothing but Rama – wherever Ramdas looked! Everything was permeated by Rama -vivid, marvellous, rapturous – the trees, the shrubs, the ants, the cows, the cats, the dogs – even inanimate things pulsated with the marvelous presence of the one Rama. And Ramdas danced in joy, like a boy who, when given a lovely present, can’t help breaking out into a dance.”


‘And so it was with Ramdas: he danced with joy and rushed at a tree in front, which he embraced because it was not a tree but Rama Himself! A man was passing by, Ramdas ran towards him and embraced him, calling out: ‘Rama, O Rama!’ The man got scared and bolted. But Ramdas gave him chase and dragged him back to his cave. The man noted that Ramdas had not a tooth in his head and so felt a little reassured: at least the loony would not be able to bite him!”


Papa laughed out and we swelled the chorus.


“And then?” I asked, after the laughter had subsided.


Papa said,”The bliss and joy came to be permanent, like a torrent rushing downhill till it finds a placid level of limpid purling stream. This experience is called sahaja samadhi, in which you can never be cut off from the consciousness of being at one with the One who has become all, in which you feel you are one with all because you have perceived that all is He, the One-without-a-second.”


Finally we end with a comment made by Swami Ramdas – about forty years later.


“Ramdas went to Ramana Maharshi in a state of complete obliviousness of the world. He felt thrills of ecstasy in his presence. The Maharshi made the awakening permanent in Ramdas.


Some people told Ramdas: “You went to Maharshi and you got illumination. Give us illumination like that.”

Ramdas said, “You must come to Ramdas in the same spirit and in the same state as he went to Maharshi. Then you will also get it. Where was his heart? How intense was his longing? What was the world to him at that time ? If you come in that state it is all right.”



Life is a short span and the pleasures you derive in it are transient and fleeting. In pursuing these shadows, you are heading towards darkness and are becoming oblivious of the exalted and ever-blissful Truth which is your real being. Through the infusion of compassion and love let your heart be illumined and purified so that you can behold yourself as all the world. A narrowed and cramped heart is the cause of misery and pain. Your liberation lies in your hands. God who dwells in you ever awaits to succor you. Seek His aid and fight with the enemies—lust, greed, and wrath—by the weapons of His grace and power. Do not forget the Divine Master. He is all compassion and mercy. Feel His presence in you and everywhere about you—in all beings and creatures. Install Him in your heart as the very embodiment of love. Compassion will then be a natural quality of your heart. The softened heart will then melt away in the sweetness of your immortal life, and all your actions will give out the veritable fragrance of kindness and love.
Compassion is the Noblest Virtue. Now your selfless life will always yield peace and joy to yourself, and offer relief and delight to all in the world.

Papa emphasised the need of absolute surrender to the Divine Will. He would say, "His will is supreme. If we are conscious of this always, there is no struggle in life at all. 

When we surrender to God's will, we put all our burdens on Him. He is only too willing to carry everything. 

Surrender means strength, peace, bliss and wisdom.

 But when the ego raises its head, all these disappear and man becomes a puny, care-worn creature. God has made man a blissful being."
"What is meant by surrender? 

Surrender means to know and feel that all our actions are God's actions; all our movements are His movements.

 If we live our life with this attitude, our ego-sense will gradually disappear. 

The whole universe is the play and form of God's sakti. 

When once we know that all are forms of the one Divine, all separateness will be lost in the great realisation."


Naam Mahatmya :

As Papa had attained realisation by taking to uninterrupted chanting of the divine name Ram, coupled with contemplation of the attributes of God, he always extolled the virtue of nama-japa in sadhana. Based upon his personal experience, Papa assured all seekers that nama-japa would lead them to the supreme heights of realisation of one's oneness with the Almighty. On the power of the Divine Name he has this to say: "The Divine Name is pregnant with a great power to transform the world. It can create light where there is darkness, love where there is hate, order where there is chaos, and happiness where there is misery. The Name can change the entire atmosphere of the world from one of bitterness, illwill and fear to that of mutual love, goodwill and trust. For the Name is God Himself. To bring nearer the day of human liberation from the sway of hatred and misery, the way is the recognition of the supremacy of God over all things and keeping the mind in tune with the Universal by the chanting of the Divine Name."

From preface 'sadhanai saram'

His association with Sri Bhagavan lasted only five years due to his master's death. As Sri Bhagavan says, "For men under the powerful glance of the Guru, as coal takes time to ignite, and charcoal is proportionately quicker, gun powder ignites immediately." The latter example proved to be true in the case of Swami Sadhu Om, whose enlightenment came about from being with his master for only this comparatively short period.

"…who stay unmoving near the Master of consummate knowledge, age and die while their ego's darkness tarries like the steady shadow lurking at the lamppost's foot. Such is perhaps their rawness, still from former births persisting."
When one such person once asked Sri Sadhu Om Swami in a slightly disparaging manner, "You lived with Sri Ramana for only five years; are there not many who lived with Him for many more years than you did?" he replied, "Yes, I am indeed ashamed about it, because when even five seconds were more than sufficient for the divine Power shining in the Presence of Sri Bhagavan to quench the spiritual thirst of mature souls, if five years were necessary in my case, does it not show my state of immaturity?".
Sri Sadhu Om often used to say, "We should not run after the world; we should not look outwards at the world, we should look inwards at Self. Those sannyasis (spiritual seekers) that run after the world achieve neither the world nor Self (God). If we try to chase after our shadow, we will never catch it; but if we go towards the sun, our shadow will automatically come running behind us. Those sannyasis that are always attending to the world with the aim of teaching the world became spoilt in the end…".

If you ask about paths other than Sri Bhagavan's path of Self-Inquiry, I can also explain about them, but only in the light of Sri Bhagavan's teachings. His teachings alone are the authoritative sastras (scriptures) for me. If the world chooses not to accept my ideas, it does not matter; let it throw them away."

Sadhanai saram:

 22. If the people of the world still do not cease making efforts, the conclusion we must come to is, that they have not yet attained perfect happiness, is it not?

Whoever among the people has obtained complete contentment and has therefore ceased making any kind of effort is truly one who has attained all that is to be attained.

“O Mother Papa! As I neared your ashram, I experienced a rare and inexpressible joy, similar to what a child would feel when it was about to meet its mother after a long period of separation. Thenceforward, I began visiting the ashram for your darshan daily in the company of friends.”
With her devotion growing day by day, she was initiated by Swami Ramdas into the holy mantra : ‘Om Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram.’ He made her give up reading the scriptures, like Eknath Bhagavat and Jnaneswari ; and, got her to repeat the mantra with a rosary, day and night. He further instructed her to consider all thoughts that arose in her mind and whomsoever she beheld only as Ram Himself. He guided her on how to offer to Ram all actions performed by the limbs of body and the senses. Her intense longing for a ‘Guru’ was thus fulfilled.
The transformation that happened to her after being with Swami Ramdas has been described by her: “Accepting you as my central object of adoration, I learnt to love the entire universe. I was prepared to extend my love towards all beings and treat them with kindness, patience and forgiveness. As my vision expanded, I came to love all people and creatures in the world; and, my attachment to my husband and other members of his family disappeared. Later, when I renounced my attachment to all my kith and kin, by your will, I
dedicated my body, mind, and all that I called my own to you, who is all and beyond all. Ultimately, you made me renounce myself, your form and the entire cosmos; and, I became one with the eternal Truth beyond name, form and movement. This spiritual summit I reached, through your infinite grace.”
Papa Ramdas asked her to compose songs like Saint Mirabai and others. To that, Krishna Bai did not agree.
